Dr. ShiNung Ching is an Assistant Professor in the Preston M. Green Department of Electrical and Systems Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis. He completed his B.Eng (Hons.) and M.A.Sc degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from McGill University, Canada and the University of Toronto, Canada in 2003 and 2005, respectively. He earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan in 2009 in the area of systems and control. Upon completion of his Ph.D, Dr. Ching joined the Harvard Medical School-Massachusetts General Hospital and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a postdoctoral research fellow where he worked until 2013, when he joined Washington University.

In addition to authoring articles in both engineering and basic science journals, Dr. Ching is the lead author of the textbook Quasilinear Control (Cambridge University Press, 2011). In 2012, Dr. Ching was awarded a Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Award at the Scientific Interface. This award is granted to early career researchers with backgrounds in engineering and the applied sciences, who are using methodologies from these fields to pursue research questions of biological and medical relevance.



Dr. Ching’s current research interests are at the interface between systems and control engineering, neuroscience and brain medicine. His research projects are interdisciplinary, focusing on control systems theory as well as basic science and clinical applications. He is particularly interested in the use of dynamical systems and control theory to study brain network dynamics, mechanisms of information processing in neural circuits, and engineering of new methods for drug delivery and brain stimulation.
