Dr. Rüdiger Urbanke, a Washington University alumnus (PhD EE 1995), now with School of Computer& Communication Sciences (I&C) at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, will be awarded the IEEE Richard W. Hamming Medal at the 2014 IEEE Honors Ceremony. The IEEE Richard W. Hamming Medal is an award, established in 1986, that is given to individuals or teams of up to three members who have made exceptional contributions to information sciences, systems, and technology. Dr. Urbanke and his colleague, Dr. Thomas J. Richardson, will be presented the Hamming Medal for “fundamental contributions to coding theory, iterative information processing, and applications” and will join the ranks of past Hamming Medal recipients, which includes names such as David A.
